Controlling roofing repair costs requires owners to keep a diligent, watchful eye on their structures. If you have a roof leak (stains on your ceiling), wind-blown shingles, a damaged roof, storm damage, defective or curling shingles or other problems, you’re probably wondering what caused them.
Common Causes of Roof Damage
The following is a list of common situations that lead to needing roofing repair in the St. Cloud, MN area:
Inadequate or Faulty Installation
There are many fly-by-night operators who claim to perform the expert roof installations and roofing repairs you need, but who are really out to make a quick buck by cutting corners. It’s simply a matter of time before a poorly installed roof causes problems. It’s important to hire a professional roofing contractor with a solid reputation in the area to determine if your roof has been installed correctly. At Zablocki Roofing, we pride ourselves in treating our customers with honesty and compassion; we’ll let you know exactly how well your roof was installed.
Poorly Installed Flashing
Vent pipes, chimneys, heating and cooling systems, etc., all require flashing to seal the areas around them from moisture. When flashing malfunctions or was poorly installed, seams and laps can open up and tiles can blow off during wind gusts and cause branches to easily penetrate the roof’s surface.
Moisture
The very weather your roof is intended to keep out can cause moisture to work its way under roofing materials. Snow, ice, wind, hail, rain and debris can result in leaks that cause mold and rot, and lead to necessary roof repairs.
Birds & Other Small Creatures
Creatures like birds, squirrels, mice and insects can wreak havoc on your roof and cause extensive damage. It’s important to keep an eye out for them and have them removed before they get too comfortable.
Ponding or Puddling Water
Your roof needs proper drainage to remove water from it within two days of receiving precipitation. Your roof is covered with a membrane that makes water leakage from ponding unlikely. However, as time passes, this water will speed up the deterioration of your roofing system. Zablocki Roofing will determine what is causing the ponding and resolve the issue before your home requires extensive roof repairs.
Tree Branches
Tree branches can scrape the face of your shingles and damage their protective top layer. Storms may cause limbs to fall on your roof, which will find you in need of roofing repairs. Even falling acorns can be a problem. It’s imperative to trim trees and branches to avoid potential damage to your roof or harm to the building’s occupants.
Cleaning Your Roof
Improper snow removal or even walking on your roof to inspect it can cause issues. Ask your roofing contractor about creating a walkway on your roof with a double layer of roofing materials to stave of roof repairs.

A sample of a repair:
- Strong winds had caused the shingles and protective underlayment to blow off the roof, exposing the wood structure below to the elements.
- We pulled enough shingles around the problem area so we could replace the damaged wood and also investigated the wood underneath to check to see if any water damage had gone farther into the structure.
- Once we saw that the damage had only affected the surface area, we installed new plywood and laid new underlayment on top.
- New shingles are applied and sealed to prevent water damage between repair and new roof installation.
Some common roof issues are curling shingles, granule loss, wind damaged, blistering and more.
